A tribute to Oscar Niemeyer by Eduardo Kobra.

The city of São Paulo is paying tribute to architect Oscar Niemeyer with a massive mural on Avenida Paulista painted by artist and muralist Eduardo Kobra with the help of four other artists over the course of the last ten days. The mural in honor of Niemeyer, who passed away last December at the age of 104, is 52 meters tall and 16 meters wide, occupying almost an entire facade of an 18-story high building at Praça Oswaldo Cruz.

Finally getting around to reading The Economist’s “The World in 2013,” the look ahead issue. The article about trends in philanthropy has some interesting ideas (pg 135). The first is a relatively new asset class “the social-impact bond.” Another is this section, which I think all arts professionals should read carefully (earth-shattering no, but important to keep in mind):

“At the end of the 20th century a renewed awareness of global poverty and the new threat of climate change led to a shift to those more pressing causes and away from the arts. (“I don’t give to opera houses,” as Mr Gates put it.) If the 21st century ends with climate change seen off, or successfully adapted to, and poverty largely consigned to the history books, thanks in part to the catalytic role of philanthropy, this recent rend itself may be reversed. By 2113, perhaps philanthropy will no longer be focused on basic needs—job done—but on the arts and other higher things. That would indeed be something to celebrate.” (my italics)

Finally, the article cites the impact of social media on philanthropy: ”Websites that give donors a direct interaction with an individual or community that needs their money will enhance and encourage giving by people with even relatively small sums to put to work. Even more important, the intended beneficiaries will be the ability like never before to give their feedback to donors, and even to shape how giving works.” Like the earlier quote, this reality doesn’t present easy answers for arts presenters, though it’s clearly working for artists (e.g. hundreds Kickstarter success stories).

Brazil will offer inmates in its crowded federal penitentiary system a novel way to shorten
their sentences: four days less for every book they read.

Inmates in four federal prisons holding some of Brazil’s most notorious criminals will be able to read up to 12 works of literature, philosophy, science or classics to trim a maximum 48 days off their sentence each year, the government announced.

Prisoners will have up to four weeks to read each book and write an essay which must “make correct use of paragraphs, be free of corrections, use margins and legible joined-up writing,” said the notice published on Monday in the official gazette.

A special panel will decide which inmates are eligible to participate in the program dubbed “Redemption through Reading”.

“A person can leave prison more enlightened and with a enlarged vision of the world,” said Sao Paulo lawyer Andre Kehdi, who heads a book donation project for prisons.

“Without doubt they will leave a better person,” he said.

And, after The Band split up, he kept touring, wrote a hilarious memoir, and then started hosting the Midnight Ramble in his barn in upstate New York. He was as generous with his talent and his time as any artist ever was. There was a message on his website on Tuesday saying that, goddammit, he was in the last stages of a long and brave fight with cancer. I wanted to write all of this before he passed. I wanted to thank him for the way he sang, and for the throb of his drums, and for the way he helped point the way home for all of us who thought we’d lost our country. Didá is an all-female percussion band that plays samba reggae, a music genre from Bahia, Brazil. Filmed in August ‘08 on the street outside Dida School of Music, a non-profit organization that teaches music and dance for free to poor women and children of Salvador. Didá performs every Friday night at 9pm at Praca Tereza Batista in Pelourinho, Salvador.
